The vision of the BioCAS Community

BioCAS (Biomedical and Life Science Circuits and Systems, http://ieee-cas.org/community/technical-committees/biomedical-and-life-s...) is a Community of the IEEE, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, a not-for-profit corporation that has the goal to be the reference for the global technical community and to technical professionals everywhere.

The vision of BioCAS Community is to push the frontiers of health-care technology by a symbiotic relationship between the diverse circuits-and-systems and life-sciences communities, including the National Institutes of Health and other medical agencies. Recent advances in life-sciences, including genomics, proteomics, and metabonomics are beyond mere miniaturization of electronic devices in conventional biomedical applications. They involve new network theory and systems methods to make sense of the massive life-science datasets for developing the next generation of diagnostic, prognosis, monitoring, and therapeutics devices – including at the cellular and molecular levels. The new findings in life sciences inspire new design concepts in circuits-and-systems such as nano-drug delivery, regenerative neuroprosthetics, etc.

Objective

We are entering a new wave of circuits and systems inspired by biology, healthcare and life style. The CAS community has shown its excellence in the fields of bioinspired silicon with a leadership in neural networks, image processing and speech recognition to areas of silicon replacing biology with applications such as silicon cochlear, retina and neural prosthetics. The CAS Community has the basic ingredients and critical mass to broaden its bio-scope to capture areas in both life sciences, physical sciences and engineering with application to medical problems.

The IEEE Biomedical Circuits and Systems Conference (BioCAS) serves as a premier international forum for presenting the interdisciplinary research and development activities at the crossroads of medicine, life sciences, physical sciences and engineering that will shape tomorrow’s medical devices and healthcare systems. It brings together researchers, designers, clinicians, and engineers from industry, academia, and government to disseminate the latest cutting-edge research results and innovative solutions for today’s complex health problems at the frontiers of biomedical engineering, life sciences, and circuits and systems.

Areas of Interest

  • Biotechnology – protiometics, genomics, drug delivery, tissue engineering;
  • Medical imaging – MNR, NMR, medical image processing and new hardware imaging modalities;
  • Bionics – artificial cochlear, retina, medical monitoring, telemetry, biosensors, sensor interfacing;
  • Biomechanics – robotics, image guided surgery, prosthetics;
  • BioMEMS – cardiology, fluid biomechanics

Never before has the merger between engineering and medicine been so strong and the CAS Society believes it can make a major contribution to the interdisciplinary glue bonding the two disciplines.
